Course Description:
As the saying goes, writing is rewriting. At home or on the set, you must be able to see and execute new opportunities within your scenes and stories.
Randy Pearlstein is a veteran of all three seasons of CHAPPELLE'S SHOW and is currently a principal on Comedy Central's UGLY AMERICANS. Randy is a professor of film and television writing at RUTGERS UNIVERSITY and is on the faculty at the Peoples Improv Theater (The PIT) in New York City. He has also written numerous screenplays including Lions Gate's CABIN FEVER. Randy studied directing under Mike Nichols and annually leads seminars for the esteemed DIRECTORS GUILD OF CANADA.
This class is for Film and Television and Theatre writers with significant experience.
When working with agents, producers or writing partners you must be able to incorporate notes with speed and ease.
On your own, you must be able to see where improvements can be made and implement these changes like a professional.
What additional character options should you be considering? What are 10 questions you should ask to illuminate 10 new options for your existing scenes? This workshop will show you multiple approaches towards increasing the power of your stories, scenes and characters.
There will be discussions, video clips and gruop exercises to strengthen your editing and rewriting abilities.
Topics will include:
- Who are these people: Are your characters as tight as they can be?
- How is it going: Do you have a strong handle on how this will play on the set and in front of an audience?
- So what: Is your story placing your viewers in a state of tension and suspense?
- More or Less: Which elements are you highlighting, and which can fade into the background?
- Pitching or Pushing: Are you clearly communicating the selling points of your story?
Whether you work in Feature Films, Television Writers Rooms, Sketch Comedy or Theater, you always want to be the person in the room who has a string of ideas that can lift the existing material to it’s most potent form.
